2023 Theme: EYE Care in the Workplace

World Sight Day is a global healthcare event celebrated on the 2nd Thursday of every October to emphasize public awareness with respect to shedding light on the prioritizing of vision and eye health 1. This year, World Sight Day is celebrated on the 12th of October (Thursday). The theme for World Sight Day 2023 is “Love your eyes at work”, a global call to all corporate leaders to prioritize their worker’s eye health and understand the importance of vision at the workplace.

Visual impairments have physical, emotional, social, and economic ramifications, and they play an essential role in determining one’s quality of life. Globally, nearly 2.2 billion individuals worldwide are visually impaired, and 100 million people suffer from a vision disability that could have been avoided or is still unaddressed. In coming years, the aging population and the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes may exacerbate eye health difficulties.

CC Buch Public Charitable Trust and our Trustee Dr CSBuch MD have been actively involved with the Blind Girls education, health and also immunization for free and our work has been appreciated at various levels.

Cost Saving Braille project got India Book of Recordsand also got recommendation by PMO for implementation by Government of Gujarat. DrCS Buch also got The World  Records India for the First Medical Braille Book on PLASTIC world over getting Environmental Award for Braille as well. Our serial innovator Mr Sonam Wangchuck complemented DrBuch telling that " Before YOU, people with eye had NO VISION to create CSB Project and save environment, trees, money and papers"!

Reduced vision can be caused by a variety of reasons, including diabetes and trachoma, ocular damage, or conditions such as refractive error, cataracts, glaucoma, or age-related macular degeneration. People of all ages are affected by vision loss, but those over 50 are most vulnerable. Women, rural communities, and ethnic minority groups are more likely to have vision impairment than other groups and are less likely to receive care .

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) report that more than 13 million people worldwide have vision impairment related to their work, with an estimated 35 million eye injuries happening in the workplace each year. Among all cases of blindness, 90% of them can be avoided or treated if identified early. Therefore, awareness plays a vital role in preventing and delaying the progression of eye diseases.

The following steps can aid a person in overcoming vision loss:

  • Following the 20/20/20 rule to give screen breaks to the eyes.
  • Spending time outside (for at least 2 hours) for eyes to avoid developing near-sightedness in children.
  • Wearing sunglasses outside.
  • Wearing prescription glasses if in need.

It is important for employers to prioritize their worker’s eye health and understand the importance of vision in the workplace. Employers can take steps such as providing protective eyewear for workers who are exposed to hazardous materials or environments. They can also encourage workers to take regular breaks from computer screens and provide adequate lighting in workspaces

World Sight Day is an important event that emphasizes public awareness with respect to shedding light on prioritizing vision and eye health. It is essential for individuals to take care of their eyes by following simple steps such as taking regular breaks from computer screens and wearing sunglasses out side.

Employers can also play a vital role in promoting eye health by providing protective eyewear for workers who are exposed to hazardous materials or environments.

Focus on Workplace Eye care and prevent AVOIDABLE Blindness.
