Dr.Chaitanya S Buch,Non-invasive Cardiologist could CREATE a WORLD RECORD of sorts by completing an Heart Procedure,angioplasty with coronary stent in Acute Myocardial Infarction(Heart Attack) in The ELDEST and FIRST nanogenarian GUJARATI WOMAN(Mother) Shantaben C Shah during the week of IWD thanks to the Dr.Ajay & Dr.Kunal Shah the relatives, whose prompt action,fast difficult unusual consent in a time of emergency for a 96 year mother with Double Vessel Disease .

For The Eldest Gujarati Acute Coronary Syndrome patient Shantaben it became “Interventional Woman’s Day” as she underwent balloon angioplasty and stenting to her coronary artery at midnight during an ongoing heart attack in an unstable condition during the golden period of heart attack. Vadodara is neither very small nor very big city and that helped reach the ICU in no time after the initial uneasiness and prompt suspicion and transfer.Dr.Kunal Shah brought her to Baroda Heart Institute wherein she was seen by noninvasive Cardiologist DR CSBuch and Invasive Cardiologist Dr.P Singh and team and with her very high BP and AGE it was thought to be risky to give her clot dissolving medicine due to fear of bleeding specially in the brain which can lead to paralysis &/or death.Doing Bypass at that stage was out of question and so we were left with either just old fashioned medical treatment of heart attack or to try PAMI(Primary Angioplasty in Myocardial Infarction).

Compared to a decade back now more and more patients above 65-70 years undergo interventional treatment for the heart ailments but we know in patients above 90 years of age,with associated diseases,poor general health and rigid tortuous arteries it is not easy to do the stenting and that too DURING an ONGOING HEART ATTACK at MIDNIGHT but Dr.P Singh and BHIRC team helped “Make It Happen”

Apart from many problems and costs associated with it many patients or relatives may not be in the frame of mind to permit such emergency risky procedure at so short a notice in a person who is 96 but son Dr Ajay Shah readily agreed to the decision of PTCA and Coronary Stenting and Dr.Singh completed the technically difficult procedure efficiently with ECG changing from hyperacute heart attack to normalising on table and within few hours of ICU care showed very promising recovery! All vital signs returned to normal, in a day she was shifted out of ICU and is discharged on Holi Day and enjoyed Dhuleti also at home

Very few reports of angioplasty beyond 90 years around the world but In India 95 year freedom fighter underwent Balloon Angioplasty and Stent in 2014 and also the eldest male undergoing coronary stenting has been 108 years from India who is the eldest patient for this globally. At Maharashtra 99 year female underwent successful PTCA in recent time and she was supposed to be the senior most female angioplasty patient world over.Our patient Shantaben C Shah born in 1919 has been The FIRST and The SENIORMOST GUJARATI LADY in the WORLD to have undergone PAMI with STENT in IRA(Infarct Related Artery) with successful outcome.
